Kitchen Gardens, Food Co-ops, Local Labels
Would it be worthwhile to provide a simple measure of acreage given over to kitchen gardens, as well the incidence and footprint of food-coperatives and the source of origin of foods marketed or labelled as 'local' in any independent grocery stores? The informal or incidental engagement of people and outlets with sustainable food supply can be a useful index of sustainability, not just its formal organization or incentivization.
- Very interesting ideas here. We would certainly be interested in looking at such data and in places where kitchen gardens are said to provide a substantial percentage of residents' diets it would be very interesting to see these figures. I don't know if they are readily available but would you have any data sources you'd recommend?

- I don't have any data sources I'd recommend. Am also based in the U.K. that might not be much help. I'd center on Detroit and Phildelphia that seem to be strong in this space. And from afar, awareness of food sourcing seems strongest in Portland - but you would know better!
